It's been brought to my attention by my good friend, Jessica, that it's been about a year since I wrote. She just so happened to mention that to me as I was editing the third photo shoot I've done for the Kelly family: two military homecomings and a maternity session. But things that you can't see from just a few images posted onto my business Facebook or Twitter page is that these two (and soon to be three) are the real deal. (Maybe you can tell from the images).
Much like the first homecoming, the second homecoming was pretty epic with a flyover as Capt Kelly is a cobra pilot. Each time I shoot on the Air Station, the Top Gun soundtrack starts up (I know that movie is about Navy pilots, but still applies to USMC pilots). Upon walking out onto the flightline, the boaw boaw boaw boaw boaaaaw from "Take My Breath Away" starts (for those not familiar, here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bx51eegLTY8) and I kind of go into a nerdy videographer mode with imagining everything in slow motion. Looking around at all the expectant families and kids that are losing their minds at the thought of one of their parents just moments away from coming home is something that can't be explained, only experienced.
But something these other families don't have is a husband who coordinates the flyover from the ship to the air wing flightline - that husband is Abby's husband, Capt Kelly. So before the flyover was in view, we had exact location of where to look and how long until they came into view over the horizon. (Again, boaw boaw boaw boaw boaaaaaw...). This time was a bit different, well way different, as he was going to see his wife as a 36 week pregnant Abby. And holy cow was that a moment that won't soon be forgotten. Thankfully, they have photographs to remember it by.
While there may not be more than three photography sessions with the Kelly Family (they are moving to Arizona shortly), what a pleasure it is to be involved in all of these huge milestones in their lives. The next chapter is going to be a big one as they welcome their baby girl in just a few weeks. XOXO
